Job Summary:
The Documentary Archivist is responsible for the management, preservation, and organization of documentary materials within the Library and Information Science department. This role requires a meticulous and detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of archival principles, practices, and standards. The Documentary Archivist will contribute to the development and implementation of efficient archival processes, ensuring the long-term accessibility and integrity of historical documents and records.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Organize, classify, and catalog documentary materials according to established archival standards and guidelines.
2. Create and maintain comprehensive finding aids, inventories, and databases to facilitate efficient retrieval of archival materials.
3. Assess and evaluate the physical and digital condition of archival materials, implementing appropriate preservation techniques and conservation measures.
4. Collaborate with other archivists and stakeholders to determine suitable metadata standards for different types of archival materials.
5. Digitize and convert analog materials into digital formats, ensuring the accuracy and quality of digitized records.
6. Maintain and update the archival management system, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records of materials, locations, and access restrictions.
7. Assist researchers, students, and other users in locating and accessing archival materials, providing guidance on handling procedures and research methodologies.
8. Conduct research and analysis to identify gaps in the archival collection and potential acquisitions to enhance the department's holdings.
9. Stay updated on emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in archival management, recommending and implementing improvements as appropriate.
10. Collaborate with the Library and Information Science team to develop policies, procedures, and guidelines related to archival practices and access.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Proven experience working as an archivist or in a similar role, preferably within a library or cultural heritage institution.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, methodologies, and best practices.
4. Familiarity with metadata standards such as Dublin Core, MARC, or EAD.
5. Proficient in using archival management systems and digital preservation tools.
6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess the condition of materials and determine appropriate preservation techniques.
7. Excellent organizational abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
8. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with stakeholders, researchers, and users of archival materials.
9. Familiarity with digitization techniques, including scanning, image editing, and preservation standards.
10. Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
